OFFICE OF SURVEYOR GENERAL

ESTIMATE OF THE EXPENSE NECESSARY TO BE INCURRED FOR

in Victoria -

PLAN OR DESCRIPTION.

It is proposed during the present quarter to remedy the annoyance caused by effluvias escaping from the mouths and gully holes of the drains in certain localities by making use of Iron Siphon Traps - Water Traps have not hitherto been made use of as it was considered that during the heavy rains which occasionally occur, the Traps would unavoidably become unsealed. This undoubtedly would be the case in certain instances, but on the other hand there are places in which water traps may be safely placed.

As the use of the Traps must in the first instance be considered as an experiment, a limited number only have been ordered from England -

A drain is required over the ground lately claimed behind the Mint to carry off the sewerage from Jardine's Bazaar, hitherto an open nullah has been made use of, the ground not being sufficiently consolidated to allow of a Brick or stone drain being laid -

The drain will be carried down the centre of William Street to the sea Wall -

The rough stone covers to the drains in Mather and Perceval Streets I propose lathing up and relaying with joints wrought.

Approved,

[signed] R. G. MacDonnell

Governor.
